Your Email - Synched Everywhere
Learn how to synchronize your e-mail with every computer and mobile device, right now.For years, it was necessary to spend a small fortune to get your email synchronized everywhere you need it. You would need Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook and Blackberry Services. Fortunately using today's technologies, you can now do it for free.
First, a quick review of email communications:
- POP3 and IMAP (Post Office Protocol - Version 3.0, and Internet Message Access Protocol, respectively) are the currently e-mail retrieval method standards.
- SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) is the e-mail transmission (sending) method.
- E-Mail Client - Program used to send and receive email. (i.e. Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Yahoo Zimbra, etc.)
- WebMail - A web based e-mail application for sending & receiving of e-mail messages. (i.e. Hotmail, GMail, YahooMail, AOLMail etc.)
Step 1. Setup GMail
- Create your free GMail Account at www.gmail.com
- After setting up your new GMail account, complete the following steps:
- Log in to GMail
- Click "Settings" on the top right.
- Click "Accounts and Import"
- Under "Check mail using POP3" Click the button which says "Add POP3 e-mail account"
- Enter the e-mail address which you would like GMail to download messages from.
- Enter the username and password for the e-mail account.
- Enter the mail server that hosts your email and the port to connect on.
- IMPORTANT - Check the box which says "
- Check the box which says "Label incoming messages" (your e-mail address)
- Click "Add Account"
- Choose "Yes" when asked if you would like to be able to send e-mail as ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).
- Follow the instructions to verify your account.
- Repeat these steps to add additional e-mail accounts. (GMail currently allows you to download up to 5 POP3 accounts).
- Under "Send Mail As," choose the account you want to have your outbound e-mail shown as Sent From.
- Under "When receiving a message," choose "Reply from the same address the message was sent to." This will ensure that you do not reply to messages sent to one account from another one.
Step 2. Your Free E-Mail Client
Recommended: Mozilla Thunderbird
- Setup your E-Mail Client to use GMail via IMAP and SMTP to send and receive e-mail.

Step 3. Setup Google Sync (if supported)

Google has specific instructions for many mobile devices. Visit ww.google.com/sync to find instructions for yours.
Step 4. Setup POP3/IMAP and SMTP on your mobile device.
- Follow the instructions from your mobile device manufacturer to setup your account using the IMAP and SMTP settings under Step 2.
